I took a 10 day break from social media challenge. That’s why I haven’t been posting. It’s interesting the things I learned about my habits.

First, I’ve been wasting a LOT of time watching what I now refer to as junk food for the eyes. I’m unsubscribing to half of the people I’ve been following, because, although they might be entertaining, they’re empty calories.

The second thing I learned is how much I really enjoy reading, and my time on social media was taking away from that. I’ve actually read three books during that time and have started a fourth!

Third, I wasn’t aware how much this was affecting my mental health. I would get caught up in politics or man’s inhumanity to man, and I was getting depressed. It was affecting my mood and my motivation.

I am back on social media now, but am very selective as to what I choose to watch and/or engage in. If I can keep from falling back, I know I’ll be much happier. And if I can’t seem to keep away from the darker side, I might have to divorce myself from it altogether. Time will tell.

What are you doing to improve your mental health today?

  1. ‘man’s inhumanity to man’…that about says it all, Betty. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it does not mean that I have to read it. So I do not. Keeps me in my happy place. Good post.

  2. Same here. I dropped out of Facebook between June and September. FB is so depressing. I do not own a TV. Since my retirement in August I’ve been listening to my Audio Books, reading some books on my Kindle and of course creating my artworks. The news is depressing and too much drama on Facebook. I only keep it as a necessary evil to promote my photography and art. Quite a few people I’ve had to unFriend and Block. Way too much craziness and I’m prone to depression anyway. We are having some very nice Autumn weather in New York and I plan to take advantage of it plus I will see my brother Stephen who has Autism on the last weekend of this month and of course on Halloween for the big party and his training center. As always we have great Halloween costumes.

  3. I do have Netflix and YouTube offers TV shows and movies. I tend to watch comedies, art documentaries, history, health, some crime dramas and suspense. I shows and movies that are educational. You are absolutely correct in your statement. Just like Faith comes by hearing so can fear, upset and sadness. If one keeps watching shows or social media that is upsetting and depressing it sinks into your soul and you will not have a good day. Since my retirement I do my best to make every day a good day by doing something productive like getting outside walking and doing my photography. Happiness is feeding your creative soul! ❤ ❤

    1. Agreed! Due to health issues, I can’t get out and walk most times, but I can, and do write…and write and sing music. I’m re-learning guitar at the moment. Creativity opens the brain and the heart…

  4. I also unfollowed a lot of the negative writers, both bloggers and on Facebook. I look to social media for positivity, to uplift me, not drag me down. I enjoy reading about the places i will never visit and seeing them through the bloggers eyes. I stay away from politics as it is too upsetting and out of my control (except for the voting)
