Rejoice Evermore – 1 Thessalonians 5:16

Another Sabbath

Another day of rest. Isn’t it wonderful that God created the Sabbath for man…for you and me, so that we can take a break from this ever-increasing speed of the modern world? I find it even more marvelous when I spend that time looking inward, having that conversation with my Heavenly Father about what’s been going on in my life. Of course, I know that He already knows all this. He knows everything. But I need to tell Him, to be accountable to Him, to take all my burdens to Him. And I need to study His word. How am I supposed to know how to act if I don’t know what He says to do?

So where does the “rest” part come in?

The day of rest doesn’t mean you go to Church and then come home and watch football and then sleep the rest of the day. I doubt that Christ ever saw a football game, and I don’t think He took many naps. No, in fact, He was always going about doing good. When He wasn’t teaching in the synagogue (church) He was healing the sick or casting out demons or raising the dead. Of course, He doesn’t call upon us to do those things, but He does expect us to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit those in prison (and there can be many types of prisons), reach out a hand in friendship. There are many things we can do in active rest. I would only say that we should never cause anyone to have to work on the Sabbath unnecessarily In this way we can all reap the benefits of a restful Sabbath.
